Keiser Concert Series: “Secret Byrd”
This joint production is part art installation, part concert, and part immersive theatre, and commemorates the 400th anniversary of the death of composer William Byrd (1540-1623) whose Mass for Five Voices forms the backdrop for this astonishing presentation.
The 1559 Act of Uniformity forbade the celebration of the Catholic liturgy in England, which meant much of Byrd’s artistic output — namely Latin-texted music — was conceived and first performed in secret. This multimedia event will tour Byrd’s essential story around the events of this Catholic recusancy to highlight religious persecution still afflicting the world today, and perhaps most importantly to encourage us all to let people believe what they wish.
